OFIC Student Scholars Gain Valuable Insights at First Merchants Bank’s Economic Forecast Event
"A powerful and life-changing experience"—that’s how one student described the First Merchants Bank’s Economic Forecast event, where OFIC scholars gained invaluable insights into the world of banking and finance. The Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges (OFIC) is proud to celebrate the success of this collaboration with our valued donor partner, First Merchants Bank, which provided local student scholars with an exclusive opportunity to attend. Held at the scenic Scioto Country Club on February 20, the event brought together students, banking professionals, and economic experts for a morning of insightful discussions and meaningful networking.
A collaborative effort by Team OFIC to extend the invite to local OFIC student scholars resulted in Franklin University scholars—Tamara F. (Huntington scholar), Brian T. (Nationwide scholar), and Sah N. (WesBanco scholar)—attending the event.
Dr. Michael Hicks, the distinguished professor of economics and director of the Center for Business and Economic Research at Ball State University, delivered an engaging and thought-provoking presentation on economic forecasting. Attendees were impressed by his ability to blend charisma and humor with complex economic concepts, making the material both accessible and applicable to their academic pursuits.
Reflecting on the experience, Brian shared, "Dr. Hicks was a good mix of both charismatic and humorous in his presentation, and all of the information he discussed was more advanced and applicable than much of the economics lessons I have learned throughout my time as an undergraduate. It was a powerful and enjoyable first step into general economic forecasting, using many of the principles I have learned over the years."
Beyond the presentation, students had the chance to engage in meaningful discussions with professionals in attendance, further expanding their networks. Brian added, "It is events like this that have the power to completely change someone's life, and you have certainly done that for me. I wholeheartedly appreciate it."
First Merchants Bank, a valued OFIC donor, was delighted with the student engagement at the event. One representative noted, "One student even followed up with a very nice email today thanking us for inviting him and asking to be included on invitations to all our future events."
OFIC remains committed to facilitating opportunities like this, which bridge the gap between academia and industry. By fostering connections between scholars and professionals, we help shape the next generation of leaders in banking and finance. We extend our sincere thanks to First Merchants Bank for their continued support and look forward to more opportunities that empower our students.
