(Rescheduled from January) “The Central Park Five” author and filmmaker Sarah Burns will sign books at 6:30 p.m. and screen and discuss her documentary at 7 p.m. about the 1989 Central Park jogger case in which five black and Hispanic teenagers were wrongfully convicted of raping a woman, spending up to 13 years in prison before a serial rapist confessed. All events, including book sales, will be held in the Benes Rooms of Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, 40 Rowland Ave., Delaware. Burns directed “The Central Park Five” with her father, acclaimed filmmaker Ken Burns. The event is OWU’s 2019 Butler A. Jones Lecture on Race and Society sponsored by the Department of Sociology and Anthropology and Social Justice Program with the following OWU departments, programs, and offices: Journalism and Communication, Modern Foreign Languages, Film Studies, Women’s and Gender Studies, Black World Studies, Office of Multicultural Student Affairs, and President’s Office. The Great Decisions community discussion program continues with a lecture titled "Cyber Conflicts and Geopolitics" by Cantay Çalişkan, assistant professor of mathematics and computer science at Ohio Wesleyan University.

The discussion is free and open to the public. It will take place at noon on Fri., March 1 at the Fellowship Hall of William Street United Methodist Church, 28 W. William St., Delaware. Attendees are welcome to bring a brown-bag lunch. Complimentary coffee and tea will be provided. Following the discussion, participants will have the option of completing a survey, prepared by the Foreign Policy Association, to add their opinions to thousands of others across the nation. Survey results will be sent to executive and legislative policymakers in Washington, D.C.

The Great Decisions Discussion Program, a free community discussion series, is designed to encourage debate and discussion of the role of the United States in world affairs. The program provides materials that help people reach informed opinions on issues and encourages them to participate in the foreign-policy process.

Joe DeLoss, founder and head fryer of Columbus, Ohio-based Hot Chicken Takeover, discusses his company’s business model, which seeks to provide supportive jobs to men and women who need a fair chance at work to overcome barriers such as homelessness or previous incarceration. His presentation will be a fireside-style chat moderated by 2006 OWU alumnus Dan Sharpe, vice president for community research and grants management for The Columbus Foundation.

The chat will be held in Benes Room B of the Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, 40 Rowland Ave., Delaware. It represents OWU’s 2019 Heisler Business Ethics Lecture organized by The Woltemade Center for Economics, Business and Entrepreneurship. Admission is free. Ohio Wesleyan alumnus Nicholas E. Calio, Class of 1975, president and chief executive officer of Airlines for America, discusses “A Perspective: Congress, the White House, and Business. Bipartisanship in Partisan Politics, in Room 301 of Merrick Hall, 65 S. Sandusky St., Delaware. During his career, Calio also worked as assistant to the president for legislative affairs for Presidents George W. Bush and George H.W. Bush. He also is the current vice chair of the OWU Board of Trustees. Calio’s presentation is Ohio Wesleyan’s 2019 Benjamin F.
