Tiffin University: Celebration of Cultural Uniqueness
In 2016, led by Dr. Schumacher, Tiffin University (TU) initiated Celebrating CulTUral Uniqueness (CCU), also known as CCU@TU, a transformative effort aimed at fostering diversity and inclusion. Recognizing the significance of their culturally diverse student body and the global community, TU's leadership embraced a mission that celebrates individual differences. Through inclusive leadership and innovative integration of culture into curriculum, TU prepares graduates for the realities of the world. Among many other events, Tiffin University plans a CCU@TU day every year. Read more to learn about the latest event in 2022, aided by the OFIC Diversity Grant.
CCU@TU 2022
CCU@TU Day was a highly anticipated event that played a significant role in Tiffin University's diversity and inclusion programming. Taking place in October, the event brought together students, faculty, staff, administrators, and members of the local community to celebrate diverse cultures and experiences while addressing important issues surrounding diversity and inclusion.
The focus of CCU@TU Day 2022 was on unconscious bias and microaggressions, as well as transformative strategies to foster cultural competence. Unconscious bias, the tendency to favor or discriminate against certain individuals or groups unfairly, was explored in depth. It was acknowledged that everyone possesses biases, but with time, effort, and motivation, these biases can be overcome.
Dr. H. Anna Han, a senior behavioral scientist and senior policy advisor at NIH Scientific Workforce Diversity, emphasized the importance of recognizing and addressing biases during a Georgetown University event. She highlighted that overcoming biases is not about denying their existence but rather understanding and working to overcome them.
CCU@TU Day 2022 aimed to provide participants with the tools to identify and overcome unconscious biases. Drawing from the research conducted by The National Center for Cultural Competence at Georgetown University, the objectives of the day included an exploration of both conscious and unconscious biases, an analysis of social and economic disparities, and an examination of how unconscious bias negatively affects the personal and professional experiences of racially, ethnically, and linguistically diverse individuals. Attendees also evaluated evidence-based strategies to effectively address negative and unconscious biases.
Approximately 250 Tiffin University students and staff members, along with 75 participants from the community, corporations, school districts, and the general public, attended the event. The impact of CCU@TU Day was measured through attendance records and assessments, including pre- and post-assessments and a personal impact survey. This data provided valuable insights into the effectiveness of the event and its influence on the participants.
CCU@TU Day served as a powerful platform for fostering understanding, promoting inclusivity, and equipping individuals with the knowledge and skills to combat unconscious biases. It was a testament to Tiffin University's commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all members of its community.
